Update
As of July 6, 2026, Perusall no longer includes free access to their platform. Perusall users may have received an email from Perusall around June 15 regarding this change. This update applies to all Perusall courses, whether they use a textbook or instructor-uploaded materials such as articles, book chapters, and assigned readings.
Going forward, all instructors using Perusall need to contact the Supply Store so access codes for students can be ordered.
- Students on book scholarships must pay the fee through the Supply Store to receive the funds.
- Other students may pay the access fee directly through Perusall or the Supply Store.
PERUSALL FYI
- Perusall is a social learning platform for annotating text, video, and audio content – motivating students to ask questions, share insights, and build a learning community. This tool is integrated with our Blackboard system.
- The University of Alabama does not have an institution license for Perusall at this time.
Instructions
To continue using Perusall, follow these steps:
STEP 1
In Perusall, instructors will choose 1 of 3 options (see screenshot)
1 – Adopt a book – Students pay only for the book; platform access is free.
2 – Choose a fee for students to access the platform.
3 – Apply for Waiver – your course may be eligible for a waiver.

When “Choose a fee for students to access the platform” is selected, select “Next Step >”. Then select “Students will purchase access directly from Perusall or the bookstore.”

STEP 2
Whether adopting a book or using Perusall with your own materials, contact the University Supply Store (SUPeStore) at textbook@ua.edu to let them know you’re using Perusall and also provide the following:
- Your course and section numbers (Example: CIT-100-001)
- If applicable, include the title, author, and edition of the book(s) you will be using from Perusall materials.
- Also, include the ISBN for the order obtained from Perusall. It is listed in the options where you chose a fee for students to access the platform and the method in which it will be paid
